Barbecue: Success

  • July 31, 2006 1:25 pm

Thanks to everybody who came out for the barbecue last Saturday. I had a really good time, and apparently the food went over fairly well. (My first brisket of the summer, chicken tandoori, an awesome asian slaw, tabbouleh, and too many delicious side dishes brought by guests to list.) We got the brisket from Costco, and a 8.5 pound brisket only ran $20. I’m definitely going to have to try it again soon. It turned out well, but would have been awesome with about six more hours of cooking time. It was great to see so many people I haven’t seen in a while, and it’s good to know that we can fit about thirty people in my dining room, though it is a bit tight. (Hopefully next time the weather will cooperate and drop below 95° so we can sit outside.)

Last Tuesday I played bridge with a new partner, my previous partner having to give up nighttime games as he returns to his job in the KC school district. The new partner took the same class that I did, so we were playing the same system. He’s also a very good player, and I’m lucky in that his regular partner is no longer avaliable to play in Thursday nights. Last tuesday we took second, which I think is great for it being the first time we’ve played together. The best part is he stuck around after the game to discuss the night’s hands, and he even had some book recommendations for me. I’m hoping we can continue as partners for a while. Also, free your calendars Monday nights starting in September, as the fall session of Lee Goodman and Tim Hays’ Bridge for Absolute Beginners class starts on Monday, September 11. I could always use more partners.

God damn am I tired of politician’s phone spam. Chuck Ahner and Eric Carter, I will be sure to go to the polls tomorrow specifically to VOTE AGAINST YOUR USING-UP-MY-DAMN-CELL-PHONE-MINUTES ASSES. You couldn’t even have the decency to have a live person call me, you had to use a damn recording. Yeah, it’s petty, but I’ll be sure to show up tomorrow and vote against you both.

Football Countdown Clock: Started

Woah, this is pretty cool. Packersnews.com has revamped their site. I guess it’s time to start looking forward to the upcoming football season. I had been putting it off as long as I could, but I guess the time is now.

The Future of Politics

Well, the world may be ending, but it’s nice to see the future of democracy in Essembly. Basically, Essembly is a social networking site, but one that lets you propose and vote on various political resolutions. (“I believe that even the most abhorrent speech should be protected.”, “I support Israel’s current actions in response to the kidnapping of Israeli soldiers.”) You then can view people who have ideologies close to yours, or see how well you mesh with other people on the site.

Pretty cool. All elections will be run through this site in the year 2024, after we’ve rebuilt from next year’s nuclear holocaust.

Best Show On TV

  • July 13, 2006 12:08 pm

This is pretty cool. HBO is now featuring Season 1 of The Wire on HBO on Demand. In August, Seasons 2 and 3 will be available on HBO on Demand. The cool part is that in the fall when Season 4 premieres they’re going to air the new episodes on HBO on Demand a full week before they air on the network itself.

That’s particularly awesome since it means I won’t have to miss the end of the sunday night football game to catch the new episode of The Wire. I wish more shows would do that.

Also, I’m kind of pissed I forgot that the web only episodes of The Office that started today. I’ll have to watch those first thing when I get home. Unfortunately, they look pretty short. Still, better than nothing in these dark days of Summer TV.

New Music

  • July 12, 2006 7:38 am

I need to get one of the albums by Blue Scholars. “Southside Revival” was a KEXP song of a the day a few weeks ago, and it’s made it pretty heavy into my work music rotation. Good Seattle hip-hop, and the albums are cheap.  ($8, shipping included, for the EP that includes “Southside Revival”.)
Kind of sucks that somebody seems to have hijacked their domain. Hopefully they get that fixed sometime soon.

I’ll still only post once every two weeks or so, though.

Well, I’ve moved to a new server and converted to WordPress. The old archives are still there, but it’s going to be some time before I get them linked up here. In the meantime, welcome. Hopefully I’ll be sprucing the place up as the day wears on.
