Too Close For Comfort

Well, since you are seeing this website, it looks like Fort Awesome survived last night's tornadoes. We were watching some TV when they cut in with a weather alert, and we spent most of the afternoon watching the storm track in. By the time it got close it was clear that it was going to miss me just to the north.

I discovered (with apologies to my friends who work at Fox) that KCTV 5 has the best storm coverage in the area. They showed a lot less gratuitous video (at least while the storm was still in the area) and had much better storm tracking software. As the storm moved through the city, they tracked the center of the storm closely, and kept up radar pictures with labeled streets showing exactly where the funnel was likely to be.

On the map below, you'll see two points where the tornado did some serious damage, and Fort Awesome down a bit further to the south. It sounds like Jessy was in the wrong place at the wrong time... She was up in Liberty, directly in the path of the storm. Since she's posted since then, I'd assume she's OK, if a bit shaken.

I'd have to disagree about her earthquakes vs. tornadoes argument. She says:

Seriously, I will take earthquakes over Tornadoes any day. Earthquakes hit, if they are small they can be "fun" and they don't last more than 3 seconds.

Yes, and if they're not producing tornadoes, strong thunderstorms can be pretty nice too... When the Northridge earthquake hit in 1994, I was about 10 miles west over in Simi Valley. I do have to say that that was more frightening than anything I've ever experienced before. (Or ever hope to...)

I guess maybe I'd change my story if a tornado really did bear down on my neighborhood (like it did with Jessy), but prior warning really gives tornadoes an edge in my book. I'll take a disaster that you know is coming over being woken at 4:31AM to a shaking house and TVs falling on your pillow any day.

Agreed - I was in a little 4.5 quake and it was terrifying - you had no idea if it was going to get worse or not. So in my book, tornados are third worst, earthquakes are second, and the coming robotic apocalypse remains first.

Toe-yeah, I'm glad you guys are okay. I meant to ask about it when I talked to you yesterday... Fort Awesome is invincible!

I'm still pissed that in the year that I lived in LA and during my numerous visits I did not experience any earthquakes. And the only tsunami I've come close to was when Ryan dived into a pool.

KCTV Weather Sucks. Listen TV Meterologists are only as good as Storm spotters out there in the feild giving those TV Jerks the actual what is going on out there. They can say there is a possible tornado here but with out spotters telling them its on the ground they dont know. I told the entire KCTV Weather staff a Tornado was really going to hit lawrence a full day and a half ahead of time. I told them to set up at Ottawa and follow 59 highway north to Lawrence. What does that Stupid Katie Horner Do? she tells her staff to go south and missed it. Katie Horner is so Stupid she cant find anything on a map unless its got a red blinking light, Julie where is this place? Julie where is that place? The only reason KCTV keeps Katie Horner is because they can get cheap human intrest stories about Katie runs in Races, She Skydives., She Does this She does that. WHO CARES? Katie Horner and some Guy at KCTV Named MR. Black only did the Storm Covereage to Steal Ratings. None of them Cared that anyone got hurt. They did not even give Credit to those who acctualy did the GOD DAM Storm work. They Stole it to use themselfs, OH look here its doing this, oh its doing that and we did this work ourselfs.

Why are you slamming Katie? I happen to enjoy watching her coverage of the local weather. I've emailed her a few times and have found her to be very personable and nice. You must be a looser. You know? She don't HAVE to answer emails from viewers, but takes the time out of her day to respond, I'm sure her job has lots of stress and she may not be top notch in EVERYBODY'S view everyday, day in and day out, but, sheesh, give her a break, yep, you're a looser. Go have another beer.
